Most of these exits of similar design I have seen come to a stop sign, usually with a turning lane to left, and a stop sign for all at a “T” junction. In anything less than ideal road conditions, it would be extremely easy for any motorist to blow that turn. Having the lanes split off giving traffic heading back west to Bartlett a merge lane is great, but motorists be warned, that “buttonhook” as they call it, is just that, and then some.Filed under: English, Automobiles & Transportation / Posted Jan-5 / comments? / more details…

Apparently Zune 30s across the globe have suffered a simultaneous crash, coining the term “Z2K9,” even if 2009 hasn’t officially rolled around yet. Purportedly, starting at approximately midnight last night, Zunes with the latest firmware froze when they were turned on, just as their loading bars filled.Filed under: English, Technology, New or Nonce, Acronym / Posted Jan-5 / comments? / more details…
Parents who smoke often open a window or turn on a fan to clear the air for their children, but experts now have identified a related threat to children’s health that isn’t as easy to get rid of: third-hand smoke. That’s the term being used to describe the invisible yet toxic brew of gases and particles clinging to smokers’ hair and clothing, not to mention cushions and carpeting, that lingers long after second-hand smoke has cleared from a room.Filed under: English / Posted Jan-5 / comments? / more details…
Free throw: It’s the greatest misnomer in sports. It’s neither free, nor a throw. It should be called an “earned, uncontested shot,” but that doesn’t quite roll off the tongue like free throw. It’s only a 15-foot shot, worth just one point, yet somehow seems to factor into the outcome of more games than not. It’s shot from an area often called the charity stripe, although there is nothing charitable about it.Filed under: English, Sports & Recreation, Slang / Posted Jan-5 / comments? / more details…

Snyder is a 26-year-old from Raymore, Mo., with a black hat, a dignified air and a nose reconstructed a few years ago by a surgeon who used Snyder’s driver’s license as a guide. That procedure followed a head-to-head run-in with a bull—a brutally common collision known among riders as being jerked down or, more graphically, dashboarded.Filed under: English, Sports & Recreation, Slang / Posted Jan-5 / comments? / more details…
Other riders arrived, mostly oblivious to the halo of interest they received, particularly from women. The IDF has made frequent use of what is known as “knocking on the roof”: Militants are warned by phone when a residential building used to store arms will be bombed, and told to vacate the premised together with their neighbors. The weapons caches are hit only after the residents leave.Filed under: Israel, Military / Posted Jan-5 / comments? / more details…
They also filled out sleep questionnaires, kept a log of their hours in bed and participated in six nights of sleep studies with a technique called wrist actigraphy that uses a motion sensor—worn like a watch—to estimate actual sleep duration.Filed under: English, Science / Posted Jan-4 / comments? / more details…
One reason that this particular conflict attracts so much unqualified attention is because it is incredibly easy to cover while at the same time providing the necessary drama and “bang-bang” (newsroom slang for combat footage) that for reasons left better explained by a sociologist, seem to increase viewer ratings and heighten overall interest.Filed under: English, Media, Slang / Posted Jan-4 / comments? / more details…

In the cowboy movies we often see cow punchers and gunfighters pull out what appears to be a short strip of leather and chew away on it—somewhat of a substitute for ribs and beans when they were on the trail or when there was a lull in dodging bullets. Some of the cowboys referred to it as “belly wadding.”Filed under: English, Food & Drink / Posted Jan-4 / comments? / more details…
Out of the types of celestial seasoning tea, the bilingual teas seem to appeal mostly to Hispanic communities.
